Arminda Cachaca, distilled from sugar cane, is a product deeply rooted in Brazil's colonial past. The design team at Arbo Design drew inspiration from this history, particularly the story of the Armindas, a symbol of the immigrant workforce that has been a part of Brazil's economic cycle since the 16th century. The design of the Arminda Cachaca packaging brings this historical narrative to the present day, merging traditionalism with innovation.
The uniqueness of the Arminda Cachaca packaging lies in its triangular neckless shape. This innovative design allows for a 42 percent increase in container volume, significantly enhancing efficiency during the logistics stage. By cleverly utilizing space and reducing empty gaps, the design optimizes the stacking of containers, thus making a significant contribution to sustainability.
The Arminda Cachaca bottle is produced using traditional pottery techniques reminiscent of the 16th century. The use of ceramics not only adds a touch of authenticity but also brings socioeconomic and environmental benefits. The production process stimulates local economies, creates jobs, and promotes technological evolution. Furthermore, the use of prepared clay with carbonate-free mass in a dry firing process consumes 25 percent fewer resources and allows for the generation of carbon credits.
The design project, which started in July 2020 in Curitiba, Brazil, and concluded in February 2021, relied heavily on research. The team used a consumer-centric approach, involving consumers, designers, and multidisciplinary teams in an immersive process. The goal was to bring innovation and differentiation to the product, and the method involved research, conceptualization, visualization, realization, and implementation.
The Arminda Cachaca packaging design faced several challenges, the most significant of which was using design to innovate in unconventional logistics. The triangular neckless shape of the bottle, which saves volumetric space, is a testament to the power of design in adding value and expanding product margins. The design also successfully captures the essence of Brazil's heritage, showcasing the best of the country to the world.
In conclusion, Arbo Design's Arminda Cachaca is a perfect example of how design can bridge the gap between tradition and innovation. The packaging design, which won the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2021, is a testament to the power of design in addressing modern-day challenges while staying true to historical roots. It is a celebration of Brazilian heritage, a triumph of design innovation, and a beacon of sustainability.
